The totems here are enclosed as if in a sacred garden, but unlike the ancient ‘hortus conculus’ they need no protection from the outside world. The piece signifies a garden of earthly paradise, for ‘the earth out of which all living creatures have been born is not dust but alive’. The black (black being the colour of fertility) boat-like structure serves to reify the totems of the Creatrix, whose iconography arose in reflection and veneration of the laws of nature.
